The Preciousness of Rare Things

The Preciousness of Rare Things

Rare things hold a special kind of value. A diamond is precious because it is rare, formed under great pressure over time. Similarly, the moments we treasure most in life often gain their worth because they are fleeting. What we have constant access to, we often take for granted. But when something becomes scarce, we see it in a different light—its value shines brighter.

As the holiday season approaches, I’ve been reflecting on the things that matter most. My daughter is home on her college break, and while I’m cherishing every moment with her, I’m also keenly aware that this time is limited. Soon, she’ll head back to her life at school. Instead of letting this reality dampen my joy, it has the opposite effect—it makes our time together so much sweeter. When something is rare, it becomes precious.

This principle applies in so many areas of life. Take Christmas decorations, for example. Someone once asked me why I didn’t leave my Christmas tree up all year. The answer is simple: it wouldn’t feel special anymore. Part of what makes the tree and the holiday season magical is that it only comes around once a year. The rarity creates anticipation, excitement, and joy. If I saw it every day, it would lose its luster.

The same is true with relationships, experiences, and even the small moments we often overlook. Time with loved ones, a walk in nature, or even the quiet moments spent with God in prayer—these are precious gifts, not to be taken for granted. James 4:14 reminds us, “What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” Life itself is fleeting, and its brevity is what makes it so precious.

So, how do we approach the rare and precious things in our lives? With gratitude and intentionality. Instead of lamenting that these moments are few, we can choose to savor them, fully present and aware of their value. Whether it’s a family gathering, time spent with a dear friend, or a quiet evening with your spouse, let the rarity remind you to hold it close.

As we enter this season of celebration, let’s focus on what truly matters: the relationships and moments that make life meaningful. These treasures, though rare, are gifts from God, given to remind us of His goodness and the eternal hope we have in Him.
