What Are You Trying to Fill Your Empty Places With?
What Are You Trying to Fill Your Empty Places With?
Have you ever felt an emptiness inside—something missing, something unfulfilled? Maybe you don’t even know what it is, but you feel it. And in response, you reach for something—anything—to make it go away.
Is it scrolling endlessly through social media, hoping for a spark of connection? Is it pouring another glass of wine, numbing the ache? Or maybe, like me, you throw yourself into busyness, filling every moment with tasks, commitments, and distractions so you don’t have to sit with the emptiness.
But here’s the hard truth: you can’t fill something with nothing.
The Illusion of Fulfillment
The world offers countless ways to distract ourselves from what’s really going on inside. Social media gives the illusion of connection but leaves us lonelier than before. Food, alcohol, shopping—temporary comforts that never truly satisfy. And busyness? It can make us feel productive, even important, but it keeps us from confronting what’s really happening in our hearts.
When we attempt to fill our emptiness with things that cannot satisfy, we only create a deeper void. And yet, we keep running, keep reaching, keep striving—hoping that something will finally make us feel whole.
The Only True Fulfillment
The Bible tells us, “My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from Him” (Psalm 62:1). The longing we feel, the ache inside, isn’t something to escape—it’s a call back to the One who created us.
Jesus extends an invitation: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Not temporary relief, but real, lasting peace. He doesn’t ask us to numb the pain or outrun it. He asks us to come to Him, to bring our emptiness before Him, and allow Him to fill us with His love, grace, and presence.
What Are You Reaching For?
The next time you feel the pull toward distraction, take a moment to pause. Instead of grabbing your phone, filling your calendar, or reaching for something external, ask yourself:
What am I really longing for right now?
What emotion am I avoiding?
Have I invited God into this space?
Then, instead of running, turn to Him. Open your Bible. Spend a moment in prayer. Sit in silence and let Him meet you there. Because the truth is, He is the only one who can fill the empty places in our hearts.
A Gentle Invitation
Friend, if you are feeling empty, know that you are not alone. The ache is real, but it is not without purpose. Let it lead you not to distractions, but to the One who promises to fill, restore, and renew.
You don’t have to keep running. You don’t have to keep searching. Jesus is waiting to fill you with something real. Will you let Him?
